Sydney OTC crypto desks

Once a trade is large enough to move the order book, the market button becomes the expensive option. Sydney has a mature over-the-counter layer built for exactly that moment — here is how it works and what it costs.

Trading crypto carries risk. Verify any provider's AUSTRAC registration before you send money.

What an OTC desk actually does

An over-the-counter desk is a broker that trades with you directly rather than routing your order into a public market. Instead of your order sitting on a book where anyone can see it and trade against it, you ask a desk for a price on a specific size, they quote you a single firm number, and you either accept or you do not. If you accept, the whole amount settles at that one price.

That structure solves three problems that get progressively worse as trade size grows. It removes slippage, because you are not consuming successive levels of a book. It removes information leakage, because a large resting order on a public book signals your intent to everyone watching. And it removes execution risk, because you know your exact fill before you commit rather than discovering it afterwards.

What you give up is the ability to shave the last few basis points by working an order yourself, and you take on counterparty risk with the desk for the duration of settlement. For most Sydney clients trading five and six figures, that is an obviously good trade.

The slippage maths, in plain numbers

People underestimate this, so it is worth making concrete. An order book is a stack of offers at increasing prices. A market order eats the cheapest offers first, then the next cheapest, and so on until it is filled. Your average fill price is therefore worse than the price you saw quoted — and how much worse depends entirely on how deep the book is on that pair, on that platform, at that moment.

On a liquid AUD Bitcoin pair on a major Australian exchange, a A$5,000 market order will barely register. A A$50,000 order might cost you a couple of tenths of a percent in slippage on top of the trading fee. A A$500,000 order placed as a single market order on a domestic book could cost you a great deal more, and it would be visible to every other participant while it happened. Thin altcoin pairs are dramatically worse — we have seen Australian order books where a five-figure order would move the price several percent.

A desk quote folds all of that into one number you can compare. That is the entire value proposition: not a lower fee, but a knowable total cost.

Desks operating in and serving Sydney

Australia's OTC layer is small but genuinely established. Four names come up repeatedly with Sydney clients and accountants.

Independent Reserve runs its OTC desk out of its Sydney office, operating weekday hours in Sydney time with a minimum order size around A$50,000. Because the desk sits inside a full exchange that has operated locally since 2013, clients can move between retail and block trading without changing provider or re-onboarding.

Caleb & Brown built its business on the personal-broker model: each client is assigned a named broker who handles trades by phone or chat. It publishes no minimum, and its stated range spans from small five figures well into institutional territory. For clients who want an actual relationship rather than a quote engine, this is the archetype.

CoinSpot's OTC service opens at a lower threshold than most — around A$20,000 — which makes it the natural first step for someone whose position has outgrown retail buying but is not yet institutional. BTC Markets serves the upper end, offering locked pricing from around A$100,000 against one of the deeper AUD books in the country.

How a desk trade actually proceeds

The process is more human and less instantaneous than retail trading, and that is deliberate. Here is the shape of it.

Onboarding comes first, and it is not quick. Expect enhanced customer due diligence: full identity verification, plus source-of-funds and source-of-wealth documentation appropriate to the amount. If you are trading through an entity — a company, a trust, an SMSF — add the constitution or trust deed and identification for every beneficial owner. Budget days, not minutes. Do this before you need to trade, not on the morning you want to execute.

Then you request a quote. You tell the desk the asset, the direction and the size. They come back with a firm price, usually valid for a short window measured in seconds to a couple of minutes, because they are hedging their own exposure the moment you accept. You accept or decline. There is no partial fill and no drift.

Then settlement. Conventionally you send the AUD or the crypto, and the desk delivers the other side, generally the same business day. Established clients may negotiate delivery-versus-payment arrangements or short settlement credit. Everything is confirmed in writing.

For very large orders, a good desk will also offer to work the order — executing it in tranches across a period to reduce market impact, with a target price rather than a fixed one. That is a conversation, not a button, and it is the point at which having a named broker earns its keep.

SMSF, trusts and company trading

Sydney has an unusually dense population of self-managed super funds, and a meaningful share of local OTC volume is SMSF-related. If that is your situation, the documentation is the reason to use a desk rather than a retail screen.

Assets must be held in the fund's name, not the trustee's personal name. That sounds obvious and it is the single most common structural error we hear about — someone buys personally, intends to "move it into the fund", and discovers at audit that it does not work that way. Get the account structure right before any money moves.

Your auditor will ask about custody: who holds the private keys, how the fund's ownership is evidenced, and what happens if the trustee is unavailable. A desk that issues clean confirmations in the fund's name makes the transaction side of that straightforward; the custody side is on you, and our wallet guide covers the options. Talk to an accountant who has done this before — our tax page covers how to find one in Sydney.

Editor's note

The question worth asking every desk before you trade

Ask them, plainly: "Is this quote all-in, and how are you hedging it?" A good desk answers both without hesitation. The first half tells you whether there are settlement, network or conversion costs stacked behind the number you were quoted. The second tells you whether you are dealing with a genuine market maker who is managing their own risk, or an intermediary who is going to go and buy it on an exchange after you commit — in which case you are paying a margin for something you could have done yourself.

The other question that saves people money: "What happens if the market moves between quote and settlement?" The answer should be that it does not affect you, because the price was locked when you accepted. If the answer is anything else, you do not have a firm quote — you have an indication, and the whole reason to use a desk has evaporated.

Choosing a desk: five checks

Block trading concentrates counterparty risk into a single transaction. Do the diligence.

AUSTRAC registration

Non-negotiable. Search the register under the legal entity name before any conversation about size.

Who holds funds, and when

Understand the settlement sequence precisely. Who is exposed to whom, and for how long?

Written confirmations

Every quote and every trade confirmed in writing, in the correct legal name. Verbal-only is a red flag.

Real premises and people

An Australian entity, a physical office, a named broker you can call back. Not a chat handle.

Reference checks

Ask your accountant which desks their other clients use. Sydney's professional community is small and candid.

Test small first

Run one trade at the minimum before committing serious size. Watch how settlement and documentation actually behave.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum for an OTC crypto trade in Sydney?

It depends on the desk. CoinSpot's OTC service has been quoted from around A$20,000, Swyftx and Independent Reserve from around A$50,000, and BTC Markets offers locked pricing from about A$100,000. Caleb & Brown publishes no minimum and works on a personal-broker model handling trades from small five figures upward.

Is an OTC desk cheaper than an exchange?

Above a certain size, yes — not because the headline fee is lower but because you avoid slippage. On the order book a large market order walks through successive price levels; a desk gives you one firm price for the whole amount. Below roughly A$20,000 the order book is usually cheaper.

Where are Sydney crypto OTC desks located?

Independent Reserve runs its OTC desk from its Sydney office, operating weekday hours in Sydney time. Other Australian desks are headquartered in Melbourne or Brisbane but serve Sydney clients by phone, encrypted chat and email — and will meet in person for institutional-size relationships.

Do OTC desks require more identification?

Yes. Expect enhanced customer due diligence: full identity verification, source-of-funds and source-of-wealth documentation, and for entities, trust deeds or company constitutions and identification for every beneficial owner. This is a legal requirement under the AML/CTF Act for higher-value transactions, not desk discretion.

How is an OTC trade settled?

Typically: you agree a quote, the desk confirms in writing, you send AUD or crypto, and the desk delivers the other side, usually same day. Established clients may settle on a delivery-versus-payment or a short credit basis. Everything is documented — which is precisely what makes desks suitable for SMSF and company use.

Can I use an OTC desk for my self-managed super fund?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons Sydney SMSF trustees use them. Desks issue confirmations and statements in the fund's name that satisfy an audit. You will need the trust deed, trustee identification and the fund's own bank account — assets must be held in the fund's name, never the trustee's personally.
